Felt Yoda

Sometimes I receive requests about felt toys that must look like a famous character of a movie or cartoon. Recently I received one like that and I had to find solution about how to make Yoda out of pressed felt.
I'm now uploading the template that I made and picture of the toy that I made.

In order to make Yoda form felt you will have to follow few simple steps:

1. Cut out the shapes that you can see on the Felt Yoda template (the body by default is green and the clothes are brown, but you can choose other colors of course)
2. The lines of the face you can make by embroidering them with a bit darker green yarn
3. Cut out and stitch the eyes.
4. Stitch the front and the back part to one another using the simple blanket stitch (you can see how to do it here: http://feltideas.blogspot.com/p/felt-boxes.html)
5. Stitch the clothes using the same stitching method
6. Add any other accessories that you like

Felt toys for Christmas

Felt toys for Christmas

Felt is great material for craft projects espacially in the winter. The materialitself gives the sense of warmness and cosiness, as it is made from wool. There are a lot of DIY projects around the net about how to make unique decoration for the most of the holydays, all by yourself.
I warmly recommend the projects for Christmas ornaments. These are easy to do and will give uniqueness to the Christmas decoration. You can use simple shapes and use your imagination to make them special. For example you can cut out the shape of a Christmas tree from  pressed felt about 3 mm thick and use different ways in order to make it colorful and pretty. One option is to the cut the same shape and connect them with simple stitch, or may be if you feel like you can make some embroidery that will give style to your Christmas project. Another option is to use the needle felting technique in order to make shapes or add another color to your ornament.

All you have to do is to cut 2 identical shapes from pressed felt. Don’t forget that the decoration of the two sides is best to make before you will connect the two parts. You can choose to use embroidery, stitch another piece(s) of pressed felt, stick or sew beads or other decorative objects, or use needle felting technique. After finishing with the decoration of the two shapes stitch them to one another, preferably using the blanket stitch and don’t forget to fill your new toy-ornament with cotton.

I prefer to use only stitching and no glue, even it’s much slower, for my point of view, the results are prettier.

How to make tiara decorated with felt

Unique accessories are always something that is impressive. Making simple decorations from felt on usual accessories that we wear anyway will make them special and will make you fell special.
Here there is a simple but very effective idea:

You will need:
1. One tiara
2. Pressed felt (few colors)
3. Hot silicon tool+ silicon stick

First of all you should choose a tiara, I would recommend that the tiara itself will be plastic and from the wide type. It works pretty good when the tiara is in strong color like blue, red, pink and so on. After you have chosen the color of the tiara you should choose the color of the felt decoration. It will be very good if one on the colors that you chose for the pressed felt is the same like the one of the tiara, because like it will look more natural.
Than make few circles as described in the brooch tutorial. What will be the best is if these will be in few sizes. Firstly place the circles on the tiara and arrange them in the way that looks the best for you, but still position them in one of the sides (left or right). You can make them look like a flower or like a butterfly, or just put them randomly next to each other. After you have the conception on how they must be positioned, than simply stick them to the surface of the  tiara and just for the decoration to be more stable you can slightly stick the circles to each other in their down part. Let the silicon cool and here you go :) you have your customized and unique tiara :)

Lamp shade decorated with felt

Lamp shade decorated with felt

Lamp shade decorated with felt

This is an easy to project to bring some colorful mood into your home.

Materials

  • different colors sheets of pressed felt (as many as you have), it can be also leftovers from previous projects that you have done
  • buttons
  • 3 sizes of circles that you will need in order to have 3 sizes that are more or less equally smaller one from the other (here i use one coffee cup and one plastic cover for one- time use coffee cup- medium size)
  • scissors
  • hot silicone tool
  • lamp and lamp shade
For the begging of this project I would recommend you to choose colors of felt that will fit the room that you plan to put this lovely original lamp.

Step 1

Cut the circles from felt, using the two sides of the coffee cup and the plastic cover (or whatever you use to keep the sizes of the circles). After the cutting you will have 3 sizes of circles from pressed felt. What is important to remember in this step is that you need to have equal number of the three sizes. For this project I have 17 circles of each size. The number of the circles depends mostly on how "rich" you want your lamp shade to be. Don't worry or think too much about it, after all you can always cut some more or just not use all of them :)

Step 2

In this stage of the project you have to connect the circles. You  can combine different colors which makes it very pleasant step. You should combine the circles 3 by 3 and each combination should be made with the 3 sizes with a button on the top. You can connect them by sewing them or by using the hot silicone tool. Here in this project I preferred to sew them with green thread. But it's all up to your point of view.

Step 3

In this step you simply apply the connected felt circles to the lamp shade. You can arrange them the way you want. In order to fix them to the surface of the lamp shade you should use the hot silicone tool. In the begging stick them only in the middle.

Step 4

Fill the "blanks" with some felt. Between the circles you might have some space that you can actually see the original surface of the lamp shade. What you have to do is just fill this spaces with some felt. In order to do it you have to cut some pieces in the shape (more or less) of the empty space and stick it below the circles. After that you can stick the end of the felt circles (I mean the biggest circle to the lamp shade).

Step 5

After you are done just connect your lamp and bring it to light! :)

Felt General

Felt is cloth-like material that is used in many different fields in the modern world.  Felt is used in number of industries like automotive, production of musical instruments, house constructing and more. In the crafting field, felt can be used as well. Felt that is used in craft is five basic types: craft felt, eco- friendly felt, blended wool felt, 100% wool felt and felting wool.

Craft felt or pressed felt

This type of felt is actually polyester man-made synthetic felt. It can be found in many colors and usually is sold in sheets with size 9”x 12” or by meter. The craft felt is very good for kid's crafts, holiday crafts, school crafts and others.

Eco friendly felt

The eco friendly felt is polyester fiber made from recycled plastic bottles. This felt has pretty much the same look and touch like the original craft felt. And still it is a bit stiffer. It can be found in any color, with embossed patterns and as the craft felt, is sold in sheets or by meter. It can be used for the same crafting projects as the craft felt, the embossed patterns give the great opportunity to make great decoration with excellent shapes.

 Blended wool felt

This is a fabric, that usually contains around 20 to 35 % wool and the rest is rayon. Its made by blending the fibers of the wool and the rayon, so that why it cannot be called wool fabric. This kind of felt is usually sold in sheets or by meter and can be found in different thickness (up to even 7-8mm). Its great for crafting projects. It is very suitable also for crafts for kids.
